The Honors Program at Denison exemplifies the
commitment of the college to exceptional intellectual
work by its faculty and students and is specially
designed for outstanding students at the college. The
program provides seminars and courses intended to
meet the intellectual aspirations and expectations of
highly motivated and talented students. The Di-
rector of the Honors Program and Honors faculty
advisers work closely with participants as they make
their seminar selections over the course of their tour
years at Denison. Regularly scheduled symposia,
honors activities, and extracurricular events com-
plement the seminar offerings. Additionally, Honors
students can take advantage of a number of schol-
arly opportunities open to all high-achieving stu-
dents at Denison.
Each year ten students are selected to live in Gilpattick House, the headquarters for the
Honors Program. These students take a very active involvement in organizing activities and
events. They each exemplify the qualities of a Denison Honors student. The 2000-2001
Gilpatrick residents were Jimmy Clawson - Gilpattick Fellow, Chris Bungard, Melissa
Cavanagh, Heather Noss, Satah Borron, Brittany Gagne, Mike Haudenschild, Steve Norris,
Sarah Meyers, and Sarah Mausser

The Honors Program otters guest lecturers in two
different fashions: Musings and Chowder Hours. Mus-
ings are up-close-and-pcrsonal talks on a specified topic
where students are as much involved in learning as the
speaker is in teaching. Chowder Hours consist ot a soup
and salad meal, followed by a speaker. Both are worthy
of one's time.

The Denison Hilltoppers boasted an
extremely successful year beginning
with the annual East Quad concert
to welcome freshman girls to cam-
pus. The fall brought a competitive
year for tryouts, an array of parties
and concerts, and many trips to
Doane Library for Buddy Kitty. The
group was honored to be invited to
the Ohio Medical Association's An-
nual Connvention in Lima and they
performed wonderfully after a true
gourmet meal. Spring semester
brought an amazing HAC Week-
end, reunion of Hilltoppers of the
past. The weekend was a blur of
harmonious melodies, amusing sto-
ries, and brotherhood. The group
traveled overseas in May as the
Hilltoppers performed on the island
of Madeira for two weekes. They
were guests of the Portuguese gov-
ernment. The group performed
multiple concerts during the trip,
but four large performances were
held in concert halls throughout the
island.

Outing Club
The Outing Club Executive Committee is made up of Andrew Suchocki,
Nate Reid, Christ Dangler, and Brad Halm. A number of Denison students
have taken part in the organizations activities this year.

Bottom Right: The Outing Club's mode of transportation apparently
broke down. Have these students made it back to Denison yet?
The Outing Club plans weekend to week-long outdoor expeditions
to destinations all over the United States. They endeavor to foster
student interests in the outdoors and outdoor recreation. The
clubs owns a plethora of outdoor gear to outfit nearly any size of
expedition. This year's trips include: backpacking to Southeast
Ohio, rafting trip on the Upper Gauley River in West Virginia,
canoeing trip to Southeast Ohio, backpacking trip to the Smokey
Mountains in North Carolina, backpacking to the Superstition and
Mazatzal Wilderness areas in central Arizona, mountain biking in
Moab, Utah, and caving trip to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky.

Crew Club
The Denison University Crew
Club, reestablished last year, is
composed of some 85 dedicated
rowers. With most rowers hav-

school, the team has done a re-
markable job of creating power-
ful and successful rowers. They
stroked their way to success and
medalled at every regatta in
which they participated. The
team traveled to Pittsburgh,
Dayton, Columbus, and Atlanta
to compete in their regattas. The
Head of the Hooch in Georgia
was a fantastic trip and the men's
team captured a bronze medal in

Despite some initial start-up troubles, DURP has had a highly produc-
tive year to date. In addition to overseeing and providing physical labor
for all collection and sorting of recyclable materials from Denison's
campus, DURP has also expanded its collection of the paper waste
stream, performed a number of educational activities, and assisted other
organizations in areas of environmental activism. An early semester
couch sale involved collecting discarded furniture from the last academic
year which would ordinarily have gone directly to the landfill, and
selling them to students.
A swap box system was set up to encourage the reuse and exchange ofi!
personalitems that students no longer needed, rather than throwing
them away. DURP helpedorganize successful on-campus petitioning of
the National Forest Service to protect federal lands from unsustainable
logging, and of Staples office stores to eliminate their sales of paper
produced from rainforest wood. With the assistance of Recycling
Coordinator Frederick Learey, Durp expanded its pilot paper collection
system to several academic buildings and established paper recycling
programs in Fellows and Slayter. DURP also organized a campus
recyclying week around National Recycling Day and assisted in bringing
Steve Trash, an environmentally-sound magician, to campus.
Denison University
Chess Club
The Denison Chess Club was tounded this school
year and the group has experienced tremendous
success. The chess club offers a chance for beginners
and advanced chess wizards to come together and
play a friendly intellectual match. The club matches
beginning players with experienced player so that
the beginner learns the basics ot chess. Through
continued games, the player becomes more ex-
perienced and gets closer to mastering the game ot
chess. A tournament was held at the end ot the year
and it proved to be a hit. The club looks forward to
expanding in the coming year.

Blank
Canvas
Blank Canvas was formed this year in an attempt to gather more
support and recognition for the arts at Denison. The art club prior
failed to accomplish anything for a few years and a change was
needed so the Blank Canvas was born. Through the school year,
the group promotes the arts by holding mural contests, art shows,
volunteering at local centers, and a variety of other activities that
are soon to come. The art club also goes on trips to museums and
art shows.

Campus Crusade for Christ is a student-
lead, interdenominational Christian fel-
lowship on Denison's campus that
seeks to meet the spiritual needs of
Denison students. The weekly meeting
of CCC is held on Tuesday nights at
8:00PM in Slayter Auditorium. Here,
students can enjoy fellowship with oth-
ers, sing praise songs, and hear various
speakers give talks on issues that are
relevant to the spiritual lives of college
students. Campus Crusade for Christ
also provides small group Bible studies,
prayer groups, and weekend social
events for students; CCC is consistently
involved in community services pro-
jects and outreaches. This year, CCC
participated in the World Vision 24
hour famine relief effort; it also brought
Christian Band "24 Idaho" to campus;
and CCC brought Dr. Edwin Yamauchi,
a professor of History at the University
of Miami (OH), to Denison to give a

acronym. It stands for words that begin, in sequential order, with the letters "M," "o," "Y," and "O." Also, with a little rolling on

In the past four years you have given new meaning to the phrase, "scholar-athlete." On the basis of your stellar academic record, you
have been inducted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and nominated by Denison for the NCAA postgraduate scholarship. You have
blended your biology major with your athletic interests by writing an honor thesis on education as a means of reduction of iron-
deficiency anemia in collegiate women cross-country runners. On the basis of your campus leadership roles you have been selected
this year for the Dean's Distinguished Leadership Award. At the same time you have played a truly starring role in indoor and
outdoor track competition, accumulating an outstanding list of credentials: four-year letter winner, two-year team captain, GTE
Academic All-District First Team, GTE Academic All-National Second Team, First Team All-Conference, Distance Medley Denison
Record holder - and, most impressively, you have been on seven NCAC Conference Championship teams, smashing an earlier
Denison record. Next year you will begin medical school at your choice of the many fine schools that have accepted you. As you
embark on this new challenge, we hope for you what seems to have been the case on the track in all of the past four years - may the
wind be at your back.

You have been called by one of your nominators "the quintessential Denison student." By that she meant that you have eagerly
claimed every opportunity to excel in the life of the college. You have been a memorable student of biochemistry, intellectually
curious and insightful, what one of your professors calls "a true scientist-in-the-making." And you have been described as having
"exceptional hands," able to mount a fragile cranefly in such a life-like pose that it challenged the work of professionals, you have
presented your work in many forums outside Denison, culminating this past year in your recognition as the Outstanding Junior
Chemist by the Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society. At the same time you have received the most glowing plaudits
from the staff of residence life and admissions for your dedicated works as head resident, resident advisor, tour guide, telethoner, and
featured panelist for admissions overnights, culminating in your Dean's Distinguished Leadership Award. This has led the office of
residence life to suggest that, before graduation, they would like to clone you - a prospect you as a biochemist can amply appreciate.
We wish you well in your journey to graduate school, with the certain knowledge that you will indeed do your alma mater proud.

From your earliest days at Denison you embraced the study of philosophy with an uncommon passion, earning the respect of both
faculty and peers. Your academic accomplishments at Denison are wide and deep: recent winner of the national Mellon Scholarship,
Phi Beta Kappa, two-time Young Scholar, National Fulbright Scholar, seasoned and dedicated editor of the Denison philosophy
journal Episteme, and presenter of papers at four national conferences. One of your teachers writes that you are a "born
philosopher," that your philosophical intuition is as good as he has ever seen in an undergraduate. This fact was driven home last fall
when, in the Parents' Weekend philosophy discussion with students, faculty, and parents, it became clear that the parents mistook
you for one of the faculty. You have also been a stalwart in leadership roles and the extracurricular life at the College: staff member
at June Orientation, staff coordinator for August Orientation, speaker of the student senate, member of ODK, and a member of the
Jazz Ensemble, in recognition of these contributions to campus life you were recently honored with the Dean's Distinguished
Leadership Award. We have been assured that at no point did these higher callings interfere with your standing aficionado of Frank
Sinatra and Pokemon. It is crystal clear to anybody who knows you that the success you have enjoyed at Denison is just the start of
something big.

The Alma Mater
To Denison
V.E. Field, 1903
To Denison we raise our song,
Fair college on the hill.
The name that sets our souls on fire.
And makes our senses thrill.
To Denison, my Denison,
In praise our voices swell.
The scene of happy college days.
The home we love so well.
Oh morning glow, which gilds the east.
Oh sun which shines at noon.
Oh stars which bloom at eventide.
Oh radiant glowing moon.
Look from the pathless, azure dome.
Shed blessings from above.
On college halls and college walls,
The Denison we love.
And when the shadows softly fall.
O'er hills and valleys dear.
Across the college campus rings,
The melody so clear;
The circling hills throw back again.
The glad inspiring song.
And in our hearts to Denison,
Our praises we prolong,
When from the fold we far shall stray.
With our souls no longer young.
We'll ne'er forget our college days.
These happy scenes among;
And when our steps have feeble grown.
Our journey almost done,
E'en then with fleeting breath we'll praise,
Our dear old Denison.

Dear Readers,
My letter to you will not contain detailed accounts of the responsibilities I had as Editor of Denison's 2(ini \(l\ tuni. hisu ad. 1
would simply like to thank all the individuals who contributed to the production of the yearbook.
I admit that I was very nervous when Courtney Wetzel, the Editor of last year's annual, left me in charge- 1 il i he A(l\ i mi i w liiK- -.In-

I thoroughly enjoyed working with the members of the yearbook staff. Their hard work and dedication wen- appi rc iaii d. and I
look forward to working with them again in future endeavors. I would like to give a special thanks to Lac lic-lk- .Sc-\ mom w ho ( aim-

With all the major changes that are occurring on campus, we thought it would be interesting to take- a look into Dc nisoii past to
get a sense of what it was like years ago. Hence the "Now and Then" theme of the 200 1 Adytum. Ho\\(-\ vv. w itlioui i lu lu Ip ot
